i will no longer raise my children to be colorblind

among the things i am working on with artemis this year for homeschooling is racism.

we need to know what it is and how it begins and how it is perpetuated if we want to eliminate it. kind of like studying a disease - to find a cure for smallpox, we had to find out what it was, what causes it, how it's spread, and how it could be eradicated.

racism is bad. on that, i hope we all can agree. we want there to be a world without racism. i think we can similarly look towards that as a goal.

here's where we are looking at things following some sort of structure, making it a little more formal than just discussing the news, which we also do:

which has led to finding this series of videos on MTV News, called decoded

a site i'll use for reference purposes is blackpast.org

documentary i am not your negro

to be continued . . .

addendum: i've added a resource list on a new page titled social justice

spam

we like monty python. steve and i listened to the final rip off cd collection for years. watching episodes of flying circus and watching monty python and the hoty grail has been part of artemis' cultural education.

ander is fond of the spam sketch. exceedingly fond. spam is a funny word. vikings singing about spam is hilarious. people screaming about spam is hilarious.

then he asked what spam is.

you know where this is going, right?

i bought him spam. and i cooked him spam. plus eggs, bacon, and sausage to accompany his own rendition of the spam sketch.

this kid has a future in musical comedy, i'm certain of it.

ander preferred his egg, bacon, sausage, and spam without the spam

artemis likes spam if it's musubi.

i don't like spam. that's all right, because steve will have it.

i'll still count it as nourishing, i guess.

i like to arrange flowers

something that my husband knows about me is that i like to arrange flowers. so when he sent me roses for our wedding anniversary, he was sure to have them delivered in a bouquet so that i could have the added enjoyment of arranging them the way i liked. and then take pictures. lots of pictures.

i like to trim the flowers every so often and put them in different containers in different places in the house so i have plenty of pretty things to savor with multiple senses. the yellow roses in a crystal bowl made going to sleep and waking up that much easier. stately red roses added a pop of color to the current collection of things on the fireplace mantel.

when the roses were spent, my dining table looked bare, so i splurged on a $4 bouquet from trader joe's and pulled out my ikebana bowl and metal frog and nourished myself with making this little arrangement.

i like it. i liked making it. it made (and makes) me feel happy. it smells good. it looks cheerful and friendly. it's here until it isn't, and afterwards i'll have the photo and the memory. all nourishing things.
